two commodities that require alot of work - but are always in demand.

not clear from your message whether or not you want to quit your day job, or dabble in it in a supplemental way. firewood is alot of work, requiring alot of handling, processing, and time if you want to sell seasoned wood. best to get a hydraulic splitter, and i'd recommend buying tree length low grade hardwood from commercial loggers, and processing it yourself, rather than spending alot of time in the woods logging. that takes alot of time, energy, and skill to get the wood down and out. before you even start to turn it into firewood. loggers are often interested in selling truckloads of tree length low grade material that would not go to a sawmill... this will give you some critical mass of firewood, and get you into the business... and let you know if you want to do it more!

maple is a real art and science, and i am not the person to give advice. i recommend that you contact the Massachusetts maple producers association:
www.massmaple.org/

i note on their site that they even have a maple producers manual online!

good luck!
